7th GRADE READING
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Periods 4 is my 7th grade reading class. Period 5/6 is my double block intensive reading 7th grade class.
The goals of the 7th grade reading course are to extend students’ ability to write, read, speak, and think clearly. Students will investigate major genres and themes in literature, practice reading strategies that can be used across the curriculum, and read for deeper meaning. The program is enriched with a study of vocabulary, reading strategies, critical thinking, and the art of self-expression. This is a student-centered learning environment with the teacher as the facilitator.
Assessment of student progress is based on essays, short-answer tests and quizzes, homework assignments, projects, and active involvement in class. Students in this class are encouraged to view the reading classroom as a community of ideas, which means they learn to listen and respond to one another, not just the teacher. At the end of this year, students should feel comfortable independently reading, writing and talking about literacy across the curriculum. Students in a double block reading class will receive intensive reading instruction to increase their fluency, comprehension, thinking skills, and vocabulary development.
