8th GRADE INTENSIVE READING
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Periods 1 and 3 are my 8th grade classes.
The goals of the 8th grade reading course are to extend students’ ability to write, read, speak, and think clearly. Students will investigate major genres and themes in literature, practice reading strategies that can be used across the curriculum, and read for deeper meaning. The program is enriched with a study of vocabulary, reading strategies, critical thinking, and the art of self-expression. This is a student-centered learning environment with the teacher as the facilitator.
Assessment of student progress is based on essays, short-answer tests and quizzes, homework assignments, projects, and active involvement in class. Students in this class are encouraged to view the reading classroom as a community of ideas, which means they learn to listen and respond to one another, not just with the teacher. At the end of 8th grade, students should feel comfortable independently reading, writing and talking about literacy across the curriculum.

!!! I have been having technical difficulties all day with this website and with trying to post the documents!!! I finally got it to work...I hope...If it doesn't work, please go to www.scholastic.com/scope, scroll down to the magazine with the hamburger on it, double click it and then scroll down again to the article, "Delicious or Deadly". All of the documents are there as well. I hope you have better luck than I have had. :)
